Sonia Jeronimo (also known as Sonia J.) is a Portuguese contemporary artist, lives and works in Serra da Estrela, an elevated mountain massif in central Portugal and the highest system in mainlaind Portugal, reaching 1,993 meters. The wider Estrela territory records geological history extending beyond 541 million years. I am creating tactile paintings through layered acrylics, sand pigments and natural sediments from Serra da Estrela. Conceived as autonomous works of art, the paintings establish depth, silence and physical presence within residential, hospitality and architectural spaces. My practice is grounded in accumulation, restraint and duration. Acrylic layers, sand pigments and natural sediments build surfaces in which colour behaves as matter: absorbed, eroded, weighted and altered by light. The works are conceived as autonomous perceptual fields, while retaining the scale and material authority required to enter into dialogue with architecture.
