My upbringing in the high desert, weekends immersed in its embrace, bred in me a deep yearning for that potent time of day: the approaching stillness of night, the sun bleeding across the horizon. I vividly recall the moment—the exact spot where I stood to capture this image. It was sunset, as I drove westward through the Mojave National Preserve. The scene unfolded before me while crossing the desert, just as I neared the Kelso dunes. I pulled over, jumped out of my truck, and stood there, waiting for the sun to just kiss the mountaintop.
