LT Playfair (Brutalist Figuration)

I'm a Canadian artist based in West Vancouver and the originator of Brutalist Figuration—an instinct-driven approach built on line weight, pressure and immediacy. My early figures and drawings from 2018–2021 established the foundations of the practice. That formative body of work is now being explored through my first worldwide virtual exhibition, 'Black Lines Matter (Brutalist Figuration)', and the forthcoming exhibition 'The Cancel Culture Years.' Brutalist Figuration grew from those early works and continues to evolve as its visual language becomes more focused and defined. I create from instinct. My work comes from raw, immediate moments—the kind you feel before you can explain. I don't approach the canvas with reverence; I confront it directly, letting the line find its own weight. For me, this returns drawing to something much older: the first human marks left on cave walls, when figures and symbols were used to leave a trace of presence. Brutalist Figuration reconnects with that primal impulse—the human hand meeting the surface and leaving a mark before explanation. The drawing doesn't hide its structure. It reveals it. My work has been displayed in Times Square, New York. My early drawings are collected in 'Original Sketches: The Early Years (2018–2021)', selected for the North Shore Authors Collection and held by public libraries in British Columbia, Canada.
