Description
"I did not set out to take a self-portrait. I pointed the Holga at my own face in the dark of the van, somewhere in Scandinavia, and this is what came back. I am barely there. Half-dissolved, half-emerging. The darkness holds more of the frame than I do. Only the hair has any certainty. The face is something the light is still deciding about. That felt accurate. The entire journey was about that threshold: not knowing yet who I was becoming, only that something was shifting. The camera caught what I couldn't have staged: a self in the process of, not a self arrived. The brief says the self-portrait is a meeting point between how one appears and how one is momentarily held by the camera. This image held me at the moment I was least formed. That is why I kept it."
