StoneDescription
In Voice of the Ancestors, Sampson Kuvenguhwa creates an elongated spiritual figure in which the human form appears to emerge directly from the stone. The dramatically extended head bends forward, its subtle features revealing what can be read as an eye and a mouth. Rather than presenting a conventional portrait, Kuvenguhwa reduces the face to its essential signs, giving the figure an otherworldly presence.
The mouth becomes particularly significant. It suggests a voice carried across generations — the wisdom, memories and teachings of those who came before us continuing to speak within the present.
Below the head, smaller rounded and organic forms appear almost protected within the larger figure. They can be interpreted as successive generations, held together through an invisible ancestral connection.
Created during Kuvenguhwa's Mapiti period, the sculpture reflects his exploration of the relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds.Try it!
