Description
This explores the importance of mealie meal, Zimbabwe’s staple food and a foundation of daily life. At the centre stands an enormous three-legged cooking pot, monumental in scale and dwarfing the figures around it. By enlarging this familiar object beyond reality, Keith Zenda transforms it into a symbol of survival, identity, and community. The pot has fallen onto its side, spilling its contents. Around it, figures run, stumble, and collapse in distress. Their reactions reflect not only the loss of food, but the disruption of something essential. In Zimbabwean culture, mealie meal represents nourishment, family, stability, and continuity across generations. Through the vessel’s exaggerated scale, Zenda suggests that this staple occupies a place larger than life within the collective consciousness. The overturned pot becomes a metaphor for insecurity and upheaval, while the fleeing figures express the anxiety that follows when the foundations of everyday existence are threatened.
