With life so hectic for more and more people, we find ourselves ‘glued’ to screens. I love to look up at the static spot of a painting on a wall and be reminded of a special time, place or experience. A break from scrolling, squinting, zooming, archiving, moving to trash... If this resonates with you too that’s great; we're shaped by time, places and experiences and owning unique pieces of art that remind us of positive moments in relation to those is a joy and it’s good for morale. My work does, and will continue to, veer between realism and impressionism. Increasingly, I'm interested in the design aspect alongside the usual focus on colour, values and the effects of light upon them. Strong design draws the eye and underpins a representational painting, whether it's realism or impressionism. We humans don't generally like visual chaos, especially in our down time. Our brains respond more positively to the organisation of light and colour through design. Our 'ooh, aah' moments looking at nature often reflect the brain's response to recognisable shapes, patterns and lines, contrasts and harmonies. The subjectivity of beauty and ugliness are something else altogether.
