In Shona culture, keeping secrets is a sign of wisdom, maturity, and trustworthiness. The elders say, “Chakavanzika chiri pamwoyo chinozvibata”—what is hidden in the heart holds itself. Secrets are often seen as sacred, especially those concerning family, tradition, and spiritual matters. Sharing too much can lead to jealousy, witchcraft, or broken relationships. That’s why silence (kunyarara) is highly valued. People who can keep secrets are respected and entrusted with leadership roles or family responsibilities. In ceremonies and traditional healing, confidentiality is vital to protect both the process and the individuals involved. Even among friends, revealing a secret is seen as a deep betrayal. Thus, the act of keeping a secret goes beyond personal discipline; it’s a moral duty to preserve harmony, dignity, and social cohesion. A trusted person is one who knows when to speak—and when to remain silent.Try it!
