My work explores my connection to the natural world and marries my love of hiking and painting. Having grown up in the Australian bush I have a deep love and appreciation of it. I have worked inside spaces without windows and know about the disconnect to nature and its effect on the psyche. I work in oil and acrylics paints transcribing from my time, and my sketches on the land, to the canvas choosing to interpret in an abstracted way. It is my sense of nature’s voice if it were to speak, what I, interpret as the land’s voice. I rely on memory, and impressions in my subconscious that emerge in the act of painting. I am fascinated by memories and how they can come into my mind out of know where or should I say resurfacing. Whether they are memories of the landscape or just life’s events I find they can be quite abstract or only partial memories of what we register as important to us. Often it is the shapes, lines, textures and shadows that come to me. I am concerned about people stuck in cities and not getting out into the natural world. My painting language aims to express elements of nature in a different way and reach the viewer on a different level. My hope is that my work reminds, inspires, and triggers memories in the viewer on a subconscious level to get back to nature.
