“Two Fires, One Sky”
Before we knew its name in English, we knew the gumamela. It grew by the gate and along the fence, its sap became our bubbles, and its petals were the first flower we took apart in science class.
Our lolas even crushed its leaves to soothe a fever or a swelling. Painting these two blooms against a cool blue sky felt like going home, back to a time when the most ordinary flower in the yard was all the wonder we needed.
