I wanted the figure to feel as though she is appearing from the black background rather than simply standing in front of it.
I also added layers of texture throughout the painting to give the surface a tactile quality. These textures catch the light in different ways, making the work feel more dimensional and adding to its quiet, atmospheric presence.
I am always drawn to creating portraits that feel slightly mysterious, where not everything is revealed at first glance. For me, Held in Black I is about presence, strength and beauty found in stillness.
