Description
This series of paintings was inspired by my travels to Guanacaste, on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a spectacular country, replete with natural wonders, and the skies are full of birds. Mounded islets covered with hairy, gnarly trees dot the coastline. The ring-necked magpies in this painting came to visit us every day and became quite tame. These large blue/gray birds are described as being harbingers of good luck to symbols of misfortune. The varying beliefs and perceptions showcase the rich tapestry of cultural traditions and folklore that have evolved around this captivating bird. The exotic young woman on the shore is adorned with beaded jewelry and tattoos and lost in reverie. Within her lies the power to achieve her dreams. The introspective girls and women in all my paintings make us ask, “What are they thinking?” Their placement in such lush, enigmatic settings questions, “Why are we here?”
