I drove three hours, four separate times, to get this shot.
The first attempt, it rained for three days straight when snow was forecast. The second time, the snow came overnight but turned to rain by 5 AM. The third time, winds were so strong they closed the bridges.
But I kept going back.
On the last attempt, I slept in my van while water leaked through the door seals. I was wringing out towels every thirty minutes. Around midnight, the rain turned to snow.
At 5:30 AM I made the first footprints down the trail to Tasman Glacier. New ice had spread across the lake. The whole scene snapped into place like it had been waiting.
I got my frames. By 11 AM it was already melting. By afternoon, every iceberg was gone. The scene erased like a secret the mountain only told me once.
