Between Image & Surface

Between Image & Surface explores the space where photography becomes the starting point rather than the final image. Working from her own photographs, Marianne Breugelmans transforms recognizable scenes through layers of paint, collage and mixed media, creating works that move between observation and abstraction.

Rather than documenting reality, her process investigates how memory, material and perception reshape what we see. Fragments of the photographic image remain visible while painted surfaces, textures and layered interventions gradually introduce new narratives.

The exhibition invites visitors to slow down and experience the subtle dialogue between image and surface, representation and transformation. Each work unfolds gradually, revealing traces of both the original photograph and the artist's intuitive response to it.
