The women (and occasionally men) who appear nude in his photos aren’t raw material to be shaped into an image of the photographer’s desire, but subjects with creative agency performing on their own terms. He sets the stage. They enact how they wish to be seen. And out pops the polaroid. That these photos are co-creations in part explains the diversity of Christensen’s images, echoing artists ranging from Helmut Newton, Man Ray, Tamara de Lempicka, and Francesca Woodman. Yet his own stylistic thread, a bohemian sensuality, runs through these, a kind of honesty about sexuality and the body not unlike the works of Peter Hujar, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Nan Goldin, the downtown New York scene now synonymous with polaroid portraiture.Try it!
