"I believe a film camera records the world as it is, as light reflecting off physical things and touching the film negative directly, rather than the world as it is merely perceived. Light that once existed is not reconstructed as pixels. It touches the negative directly, as grain, leaving a physical trace. This photograph shows a single piece of driftwood, washed up on the shore. The negative and this tree were, in that sense, actually in contact with one another.This tree once stood rooted somewhere on land that had never known the sea, before it crossed the water and arrived here. What did it witness along the way, and what does it think now that it has arrived. These are things I cannot know. What I can be certain of is that the whole of this uncertain time is held within its decayed, altered form. As someone who develops her own film, I face that uncertainty in the dark, by hand, right up until the final moment the image is fixed."Try it!
