I'm a self-taught artist living and working in Auburn, Alabama. While I like to experiment with all kinds of materials, I always find myself coming back to charcoal. There's something about the raw, hands-on nature of it- the way you can smudge, layer, and erase- that just feels right to me. My work mostly lives in the details. I'm a big fan of: - Historical Portraits: I love digging into the past and trying to capture the character and "grit" of people from another time. - Wildlife Close-ups: I love to render close-ups of all animals, focusing on the texture of fur or the expression in an animal's eyes to show a side of nature we don't always stop to see. Because I'm self-taught, my process is a lot of trial and error and following what looks good to me rather than following a textbook. I use charcoal to strip away the noise of color so I can focus entirely on the light and shadows of whatever I'm drawing. With that said, I will be stepping into oil painting soon in hopes of extending my portfolio. For me, if a piece makes you want to step closer and really look at the small stuff, I've done my job.
