Created around 2000, Mweya weSango – Spirit of the Wild belongs to Sampson Kuvenguhwa’s Mapiti period, when human, animal and natural forms became increasingly intertwined with expressions of spirit.
Originally known as Hunting Scene, the sculpture reaches beyond the literal idea of hunter and hunted. Rough, largely untouched Springstone surrounds highly polished flowing forms, creating a dialogue between the physical world and the unseen forces within it.
Through Kuvenguhwa’s Mapiti philosophy, human, animal, earth and spirit become interconnected. The hunter and the hunted are no longer simply opposing forces, but participants in the same cycle of existence. Forms emerge from the stone and disappear into it again, suggesting life returning to its source.
Mweya weSango transforms the hunt into a meditation on humanity’s relationship with nature — reminding us that hunter, animal and land ultimately belong to the same living and spiritual world.Try it!
