Description
“Lovers” by Sampson Kuvenguhwa is a striking example of Zimbabwean Shona stone sculpture, carved from hard springstone. Standing at 92 cm tall, the piece embodies two figures gracefully intertwined, their forms merging into one another in an elegant dance of intimacy and devotion. The highly polished surfaces contrast with the raw, textured areas of untouched stone, creating both a tactile and symbolic balance—smoothness representing harmony, and the rough stone symbolizing the enduring strength of love through life’s challenges. Kuvenguhwa, renowned for his Dry Tree and Mapiti styles, imbues this sculpture with fluidity and abstraction, allowing the viewer to feel both the physical closeness of the couple and the spiritual bond that unites them. The elongated proportions add a sense of timelessness and elevate the piece into a universal portrayal of human connection, making Lovers not just a sculpture, but a poetic meditation on unity and togetherness.
