Description
A dusky, almost timeless rendition of Bideford Bridge, Rosie crosses this arched river almost daily to get to her studio in East the Water, every time Bridget's Ford, pre-Roman tales of the town drift through her head, carried on the rising or lowering Torridge waters beneath, the light is never the same moment by moment. Tales of a before time, before the arched bridge, when a ford was the crossing point for the river. The arches are rumoured to represent the size of the investment in the construction from each of the surrounding parishes, however a recent conversation with an older gentleman stone mason, who worked for decades on the stone banks and bridges of the river Torridge, revealed a more likely story of the arches sizes being dictated by the size of the oak trees felled and floated downstream to build it. Even in 2023, there is still an oak element to the construction of the bridge. A Turner-esque hue!
