Work From Home

My window overlooked the rooftop of my neighbors' houses and occasionally my cat would venture out on the roof and sit there for awhile... contemplating the plump birds perched on the neighbors' antenna. I would watch my cat and my cat would watch the birds. It reminded me of Hitchcock's 'Psycho' except, thankfully, no one ever gets killed in this movie.

Rain Garden of Surprises

The one thing I've learned to enjoy in those 730 days is the art of slowing down. I did indeed stop to smell the proverbial roses, I tended my little garden every morning, sat on my patio to enjoy the view whenever it rained, took pleasure in reading some of my old books again and discovering things I missed the first time.

It's Nice Outside

We have neither a gold bathtub nor a bathroom this humongous at our house but we do have 3 cats who led a life of luxury. In the left corner of this painting is a print transfer of an old 'Kafka By The Shore' book jacket for a poster. The elusive cat in Murakami's story was my favourite even though he never actually said anything, most cats don't say very much but they sure know how to live it up.

When you cannot travel you look at old photos of your past travels. Our last trip before the pandemic was to Hokkaido and the most memorable image, for me, was Lake Onuma near Noboribetsu with its geometrical arrangement of ice sheets on deep blue waters. It was very peaceful on the surface but it looked ominous below. It was literally (and figuratively) cold.

These are unprecedented times we live in. Who would have thought we would all be stuck at home for almost 2 years. In 730 Days (all of 2020 & 2021) the only travels I made were around my house and rediscovering my island Singapore (coordinates: 85 miles North of the Equator). 

I have been fortunate for those 730 days were not as bleak for me as it was for millions of others. In fact, I quite enjoyed the quiet. When the noise is taken away, somehow colors seem more colorful, familiar places seem more alive and playful, even the mundane looks like an adventure.
