Grandma and Grandpa's House

Graef's painting, Shelby's Backyard, is vibrant landscape painting created in a unique style. It is a re-creation of a cloudy gray cold day in Indiana, painted in colors of pink, red, orange and yellow. The interesting challenge of the work was the perspective and composition of the backyard with a shed placed in front of another house and yard with trees interspersed. This is a very familiar cityscape/landscape scene near my home. The main street in Clearwater, Florida has been closed to automobile traffic, allowing only foot traffic and restaurant seating outside. During off hours there is virtually no one walking around in downtown Clearwater. I captured the view of the area in bold color and detail with hues of red, yellow, lavender, orange and green.

I fell in love with all the crazy chaotic details on the scene including cars, buildings, traffic lights, crosswalks, signs and trees. Selecting what to include in the painting and what to leave out, creating an interesting dramatic composition was a big challenge.

It often rains in Clearwater, Florida, where I live but a rainbow like this one is not seen often. The artwork is packed with interesting details of the downtown buildings painted in vibrant colors.

This painting is what I have to to say about the Oakland Bay Bridge. Per Wikipedia, this is the section of Interstate 80 spanning San Francisco Bay in California going between San Francisco and Oakland, carrying two hundred thousand plus cars, trucks and buses every day on two decks. Inspired by the complexity of all the buildings jumbled together, the perspective of the cars moving in the distance and the bridge itself, I was excited each step of the way during the creation of this artwork in hues of violet, red, yellow, green and blue in shapes, colors, lines and patterns.

Oakland Bay Bridge

Standing on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge looking at the view of Manhattan at night is a favorite scene of mine. I captured the features of the bridge and landscape under a bright yellow full moon with bold shades of blue, a violet sky, turquoise water, contrasting lights and the dramatic arch of the bridge itself. I grew up not far from the city of New York and lived there for a couple years, enjoying the city landscape and the huge beautiful cityscape created by that bridge.

Brooklyn Bridge

This is a vibrant, colorful image of the Bourne Bridge in Massachusetts created in a sort of Pop Art style, freely interpreting the angles and patterns in this great bridge. The work involved hours of painting out the intricate pieces of the bridge using shades of green, painstakingly adding one part at a time with highlights of red and violet.

Bridge to CapeCod

For those of you not familiar, the George Washington Bridge is a double decker bridge that spans the Hudson River connecting Fort Lee, New Jersey and New York City.

My history, going back decades, overlaps with the Tacony Palmyra Bridge. It is a little bit of a snapshot from my life. To begin with, it spans the Delaware River taking travelers from the Tacony section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to southern New Jersey. I drove across often visiting my grandmother, other family members and going back and forth to college. It is a very narrow bridge with narrow lanes and really wasn't much to look at, but that's where the challenge begins....transforming the image into something striking to look at.

This vibrant Expressionist landscape painting was inspired by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge which spans the Lower Tampa Bay connecting St. Petersburg, Florida to Terra Ceia. I created this unusual work with brilliant pink, green, red and blue, disregarding the the colors in reality almost entirely. A striking and unique perspective is re-created here, giving you a good idea of how I see the world.

Many thousands of commuters drive across the bridge every day from Downtown Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan, New York, or vice versa. This view re-created in the painting was from standing in Brooklyn and looking under the bridge toward Manhattan. The skyscrapers in the distance are dwarfed by the immensity of the bridge.

This is a vibrant acrylic Pop Art style painting of the beautiful Mackinac Bridge. This architectural masterpiece is a suspension bridge connecting the Upper and Lower peninsulas of the US state of Michigan. The length of the bridge with all its lines and patterns made this subject irresistible and so I was inspired and went to work creating another colorful architectural landscape work. Driving Over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge

This medium size acrylic painting on stretched canvas, was inspired during a very long wait in the Newark Airport in New Jersey. I had six hours to kill while waiting for the next flight after my original one was cancelled. It was a grand time, walking around the airport terminal photographing the different scenes of planes landing, unloading and taxiing to their gates. This is the thirteenth in the series of aircraft paintings.

This is a bold and brilliant painting of the entrance to the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City, New Jersey heading to New York City in traffic. The painting was inspired by my many commutes through this tunnel into the city and my love for turning chaotic urban cityscapes into beautiful harmonious compositions.

I enjoyed creating another vibrant urban landscape in acrylic on stretched canvas. This one is a cityscape in Chicago with beautiful yellow flowers in the foreground. It has a striking composition with an interesting perspective, looking up at the tall buildings. My choice of color is unusual and selected unlike any other artist.

The Miami City Ballet building in Miami Beach is a striking piece of architecture and so caught my eye as a subject for a landscape painting. All the curves, angles and repetitive patterns made it a complete joy to re-create on the canvas. My vision of spectacular color comes alive, dancing on the canvas: greens bouncing off deep blue, pink bouncing off bold red with the brightest of yellows to add to the mix.
