At first glance, the juniper's berries and branches might seem rather unassuming. Blue-grey berries nestled amidst green foliage could easily escape notice from a casual observer. Yet, upon closer inspection, the intricate green branches reveal mesmerizing patterns of light and dark triangles. The berries, though lightly textured spheres, each possess unique peaks, adding to their individuality. Thriving in the desert, these junipers endure scorching summers and freezing winters alike. 
 
While these junipers may not boast flashy colors or vibrant displays, their resilience and elegance are quietly remarkable. There's a lesson to be learned from them. Strength isn't always about making noise; it can manifest through understated actions. Beauty, too, does not need to be flamboyant to be striking; it can be found in humility and simplicity. Sometimes, the most profound messages are conveyed through silence.

It is hard not to feel humbled in this place. The towering canyon walls, standing tall for millions of years, make you realize just how small we really are in the grand scheme of things. No matter where you look, there's always something bigger, older. Time seemed to stand still as I stood so small. 
 
Taking in the view, I allowed myself to just be. Work, deadlines, obligations—all faded into the background against the incredible expanse in front of me. In that moment, a rare feeling of stillness washed over me as I took in the masterpiece that time has been creating since long before any one of us walked the earth.

Just around the corner, my daughter played in the sand. I was struck by the patterns in the sandstone walls nearby, and the contrast of the smooth and sharp edges. Over millions of years, these tall walls and large boulders had turned to the soft sand beneath our feet. Both forms bringing joy and wonder. 
 
Through time, it’s easy to lose sight of where we are and the joy we can bring to the world when we get fixated on what we used to be or what we wished we were. Being a mom and a wife and a daughter and a friend takes work. They all add layers to my life, but sometimes leave me nostalgic for simpler times. Despite the challenges and fatigue that can come with juggling so much, there's satisfaction in being present for those shared experiences that make life meaningful. 
 
As we navigate life's transitions, it's comforting to realize that the ability to bring joy and wonder to the world remains within our grasp.

The bee bounced from one bunch of flowers to another. It’s yellow body blending in, but it’s black stripes and wings standing in contrast to the flowers it landed on. Spending no more than a few seconds on each flower, the bee was intent on finding what it needed, not deterred by the breeze or the other bees it had to compete with. 
 
I watched the bee for a minute, amazed by how quickly the small creature moved from one flower to the next, even on the blustery day where the wind seemed to be working against it. 
 
I want to be more like this bee. Determined and not distracted by everything in life that wants to pull me away from the things that are most important to me — family, friends, adventure. Focusing on those important things, though, takes practice and persistence. It takes building small habits into a lifestyle that one day, if I look up from what’s in front of me, has become the life I’ve always dreamed of.

Persistence

The wind fiercely whipped against my face, threatening to push me off the canyon's edge. I decided to lie down, minimizing my profile to reduce the impact of the gusts. Despite the chill, I had journeyed for hours to capture this moment after being confined in the car, and I was determined to seize the opportunity. 
 
After just a few hours on the road, I had found myself transported to a whole new world—far from the demands of work and the chaos of everyday life. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a captivating play of colors, shadows, and shifting clouds, I couldn't resist absorbing every detail. This escape and reconnection with the expansive landscape were precisely what I needed to slow down and care of myself.

Down below the trail to Angels Landing, the stream had receded, revealing patterns of color and texture that showed off the interesting ways nature creates its own art. A lone rock had fallen, disrupting the pattern at the top of a patch of light sand, its presence almost seeming deliberate within the natural artistry. 
 
This photograph serves as a reflection on our influence in the world. Much like the rock disrupts the pattern, our actions can similarly disrupt the delicate balance of our relationships and our surroundings. It's a gentle nudge to pause and contemplate the ripple effect of our words and deeds. With each choice, we hold the ability to either nurture or harm, leaving lasting impressions on those around us. 
 
Ultimately, it's a reminder of the responsibility we bear—to tread mindfully, recognizing the potential consequences of our actions, and consciously choosing paths that enrich rather than diminish.

Impact

Looks pretty peaceful, right? I thought I was alone while capturing this beautiful Rocky Mountain sunset. Little did I know it would quickly turn into a bear encounter story! As the shutter snapped on this scene, a massive splash to my right revealed a black bear on the rock we occupied just an hour earlier. 
 
Picture the standoff: me with my camera, the bear with a curious gaze. After a while, it lost interest and ambled away. On my way back to camp, a second, larger bear—more brown than black—crossed my path, triggering another standoff. Channeling my inner wilderness survival instincts, I got loud, yelled a creative "Go away, bear!", and the bear retreated into the woods. 
 
Returning to camp, my husband noticed my pale face as I recounted the bear saga. This photo now reminds me of the unexpected twists life throws our way and how quickly everything can change. Cherish the moment you’re in.

Serenity at Sunset

In the woods, water flows through rivers and streams without a thought about who or what might be passing by. It carries leaves and sticks downstream, wears boulders into pebbles, and smooths sharp edges with its quiet power. 
 
Listening to the stream as the water passed by, time seemed to pass more slowly, too. I had taken a hike to get out of the house, and I sat on the side of this stream, taking a moment to breathe. It didn’t take long for the stress of life to start to dissipate, my breathing slowing as the water seemed to wash it all away. 
 
In taking that pause, I returned to my hike with more energy and vigor. In this photo, just as the water washes down the mountain, the veins of nature cleansing the forest, we, too, need the time to rest, to breathe, and to clear the air and stress from our lives from time to time so we can come back refreshed to tackle whatever life has in store for us.

Sandbeach Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park holds a special place in my heart, especially this trip. It was on this trail that my dad introduced me to backpacking when I was around 8 years old. Now, years later, I had the joy of experiencing the trail anew through the fresh eyes of my 7-year-old daughter, alongside my dad and uncle. 
 
As I sat beneath the stars, enveloped in the night's serene silence, I found myself reflecting on both these backpacking journeys. The memories of my first trip with my dad and the recent adventure with my daughter allowed me to appreciate the different phases of my life. Looking back, I couldn't have envisioned the path my life would take during that initial trip. Yet, the reality has far exceeded anything I could have imagined.

The hike was dotted with clusters of Columbines, painting the landscape with their vibrant purples. It marked one of my earliest adventures with my daughter, then just 9 months old snug in a backpack for the journey. As a new mom, my body, not quite back to 'normal', was not happy with the exertion, but I was happy to reconnect with nature alongside my mom. It feels like a lifetime ago and yet as fresh as yesterday. In a flash, my daughter, much older now, carries her own pack on our backpacking adventures. Just like those fleeting Columbines that graced our path, the memories of that hike now live solely in our minds. This photo, a constant reminder of the ephemeral nature of time and everything around us.

Mornings come early in the summertime when the days are long, and the sun rises early, but these quiet moments before the hustle of the day begins are worth the lost sleep. During family vacations like this, these tranquil mornings become my cherished time of solitude — quietly rising early, peacefully watching the sun come up, and listening as the world comes alive — before family adventures dominate my attention. 
 
I stood there and watched as the sun’s rays peaked over the trees, between the peaks around Chicago Basin, and lit up the valley below. I closed my eyes and soaked them up. The clear sky held so much promise for the day and allowed for a faint glowing arch around the sun. It was going to be a great day…I could feel it in my bones.

Easily overlooked, I almost stepped on the small plants growing in the rock, but the bright green caught my eye. Small plants, they had flourished, defiantly claiming their spot in the world. 
 
I paused to take them in. Given their resting place, the seeds from which these plants grew could have easily given up, decided that this place was too hard to grow in. Yet, they persevered and took root in this small patch of dirt, determined to live. They had sprouted green leaves to brighten the muted grays and compliment the rosy quartz. 
 
On darker days, when the world seems to be too much to handle, I could also choose to give up. Or I can choose resilience. Just as these plants persevered and found nourishment in the unlikeliest of places, I too can draw strength from adversity. Not every day is going to be easy, but I can dig deep from my roots to keep moving forward and brighten the world in my own way.

Bright in the day, the sun glistened on the sap of the two pinecones perched on the branch. They looked like they could fall off at any minute with the right gust of wind. The two of them together, though, seemed to be hanging on, resisting gravity. 
 
It struck me how often I've felt the same precariousness in life—moments when I've struggled to hold on, unsure if I could bear the weight alone. Asking for help isn't easy. It bruises our pride and shakes our confidence. But in reaching out, we discover something profound: the strength in vulnerability, the reassurance in connection. 
 
Just as those pinecones find stability in each other's presence, so too do we find comfort in the support of others. In sharing our burdens, we realize that we're not alone in our struggles. It's the human connection that adds richness to life, reminding us that we're all in this together.

Solidarity

Chicago Basin holds a special place in my heart. The distinct outline of the four fourteeners that forms the backdrop of the Million Dollar Highway never fails to captivate me. Memories of cherished moments — riding the Durango-Silverton train to embark on a multi-day backpacking adventure where we had the basin nearly to ourselves…except for the goats. 
 
I hope to revisit this sanctuary with my daughter, eager to share the magic I experienced. Yet, I can't shake off the apprehension. Stories of its increasing popularity and the resulting human impact weigh heavy. Will the pristine wilderness I remember be marred by signs of overuse and neglect? 
 
As I take in this photo, it serves as a poignant reminder of that initial journey and the importance of mindful stewardship of our wild spaces. It urges me to tread lightly, ensuring that future generations, including my daughter, can revel in the untouched beauty of places like Chicago Basin for years to come.

My work captures the transient beauty of landscapes in nature, each moment a unique and unrepeatable masterpiece.

Each artistic journey often begins with a pilgrimage to remote mountain destinations, where solitude offers respite from the daily grind and a chance to clear my mind. I yearn for these moments more frequently than I often indulge in them. 

My intentions are usually set on capturing sweeping, large-format landscapes that mirror the serenity I find in these remote locations. Yet, as I traverse these landscapes, I'm drawn to the delicate details that often go unnoticed. The small pine tree tenaciously clinging to life in a rocky crevice or the vivid leaf resisting gravity on a crisp autumn day—these are the moments that capture my attention. 

In this fast-paced world we live, these moments compel me to slow down and embrace the wisdom that life's true essence resides in the journey, not just the destination.
