Description
This series of photographs is a meditation on feminine spirituality with the unique paradoxes that women face. Through generations, images of female devotion have been central to religion yet in daily life oppression has been prevalent. These images ask: How do women reconcile public statements of devotion with the everyday presence of marginalization? Taken in 1987, these photographs have been buried in my archive and are now printed on delicate handmade Japanese Washi paper. My intention here was twofold. First of all, I wanted to call attention to the undermining of women’s worth in our society today. Secondly, and paradoxically, I wanted to evoke the light and life that a spiritual body exudes in its essence as a living being. Ultimately, we are all spiritual beings, and if we choose to look at ourselves in a certain light, we as women can transcend society’s restrictions.
