Part of the Unleashed collection 2022. This painting started in 2022 as part of a collection but was completed only in 2023. It was transformed after the last collection was launched and I was able to release a burden carried over from the past. There is an interesting interplay between the various shapes and colours that were inspired by the Atlantic coastline in Portugal, the movement of the waves on the rocks, and the ever-changing landscape. The initial underlayer can be visible when looking closely, as if it is playing hide-and-seek with the viewer. This painting is dynamic, with powerful energy that invites you to look deeper and deeper in order to discover its past.

When our worlds collide

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

Unleashed describes a state of being released, free and unrestrained. It also describes setting an uncontrollable force into motion. Both of these describe my experience creating this collection.

When I was a little girl, I didn't speak much. I did everything I was told, I never argued or disobeyed, I was the daughter my parents expected me to be. While on the surface everything seemed fine, it wasn’t. I wasn’t given the tools to express what was inside me. As an artist today, I am learning a new language that helps me discover who I am and my truth.

In this body of work, I dived into the memories of that little girl, re-living the pain and frustration she experienced not being heard when she did speak, helping her to remove all the guilt she’s been carrying on her shoulders for years for being misunderstood, I gave her permission to look in the mirror and see the powerful force inside her. I liberated her.

Discovering raw canvas sparked to my creative process. Its soft texture, neutral colour, ability to absorb water and paint, the submissive flow of paint and blurry undefined boundaries enabled my exploration of new colours, shapes and strokes. I am fascinated by the bold, imperfect rocks hidden under the water of the Atlantic Ocean, often covered in green seaweed, and surrounded by golden sand. Mostly hidden, they reveal themselves when the ocean lets go and the storm is over, painting a new landscape of their own.

“Unleashed” allowed me to get completely lost in my creative process, yet to feel confident that I cannot make mistakes by following my heart. I learned to trust myself and to give a voice to the little girl. I hope this collection will inspire you to listen to your inner voice and unleash what must come out..
