PrintsDescription
The Cherokee Orphan Asylum Press newspaper serves as the background for this watercolor. The monarch butterfly migration is a colorful part of Oklahoma in the fall, September through October and represents the change the new orphan faced as she was placed in the Cherokee Orphanage. NULLI MALUM PRO MALO REDDENTES is Latin and means “render to no one harm for harm”. My wife’s grandmother was number 44 on the Saline district orphan roll and was part of the inspiration for the painting. I hand draw and letter the documents I use as background to avoid pixilation and to be able to produce the aged and weathered appearance.
