Description
African American hands painted over the hand drawn and lettered Cherokee Freedmen Roll Card. Important dates of 1901 and the1904 citizenship certificate show how long the freedmen have waited for their rights by treaty. The fathers hand with the hand of his daughter symbolizes each generation leading the next into the future. The coffee cup stain on the left is symbolic of how casual the approach to making the Freedmen tribal citizens. The red ribbon in the girls sleeve represents their bloodline going back in many cases to before the Trail of Tears. This original is no longer available. Prints can be purchased in various sizes and styles starting at $22
