Description
A framed vintage oil on board 16"x9" original painting featuring a woman from the back signed by the late Haitian master Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue to add to your contemporary art collection. This artwork belongs to the private collection of Georges S. Nader and is sold as-is. Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue (Haitian, 1930-1996) was one of Haiti's most renowned painters of the 20th century. Gourgue began painting at an early age and eventually exhibited his works throughout Europe and the Americas. His father was a French psychiatrist, and his mother was said to be a Haitian voodoo priestess. He typically painted scenes of rural Haitian life and vodou ceremonies. Gourgue, who had no formal training, often combined flowers, mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and voodoo symbolism, in a personal style that combined surrealism and naive art. "He is beyond dispute the leading figure in modern Haitian painting."
