Description
The starting point for this drawing was an image of a base player, at the top of the steps leaving a subway station. Knowing musicians myself, I recognise the effort required to carry around heavy instruments. I like the image because it refers to Jazz music, which for me has been the iconic music of the last hundred years, encapsulating the idea that contemporary life has themes running through it and yet we have to improvise in order to breath life into our existence. I was looking closely at the image to get a likeness, because I was inspired by the person, their stance and wondered who they might have been; at the same time I was inventing the drawing, not sticking too closely to the original image, in a process you might call ‘loose tight’.
