Chengetedzo (Protection)
Description
Chengetedzo (Protection) reflects the Zimbabwean belief that protection is both spiritual and ancestral — unseen yet ever-present. In Shona culture, chengetedzo goes beyond physical safety; it is quiet guardianship carried by ancestors, spirits, and maternal intuition. Florah Maphosa presents femininity as a shield — calm, watchful, and unwavering.
The woman’s backward glance suggests awareness, reminding us that protection begins with perception. The serpent encircling her head and body evokes ancestral guardianship and spiritual alertness, where certain creatures are seen as protectors rather than threats. Her dark, grounded figure against the soft pink background symbolizes the balance between vulnerability and strength.
The floral garment at her waist represents life and continuity — the very reason protection exists. Through this work, Maphosa honors African women as guardians of family, culture, and spiritual order.Try it!
