Description
"Every house has interior and exterior walls, and sometimes the exterior walls tell a story that is not immediately obvious. "A (S)hell of a Choice: The Scallop's Dark Side" is one such story. The scallop shell is the traditional symbol of a successful pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It represents the many routes of the Camino de Santiago that lead there. In Venice, however, it has a different meaning: it represents the Sala Fumatori, or smoking area. Strict smoking bans are in effect in Italy, including in Venice, in public buildings as well as in many private businesses, bars, and restaurants. Smoking is generally only permitted in designated areas or outdoors. These areas are often unofficially marked by scallop shell halves on windowsills. The scallop shell is also recognised globally as the symbol of the Shell corporation."
