HONORING ANCESTRAL BLACK ARTISTS & ORGANIZATIONS
Artist
Sign collage designed by Curator.Description
Before the 1960s American art institutions and museums ignored African American artists, theory, and scholarship. Black scholars were not referenced in books, papers, and presentations. But the Black Arts Movement of the 1960's insisted, and with the assistance of community support and national/international philanthropy, fragile recognition was established with limited benefits. These are some of the many stalwart "Culture Sculptors" and HBCUs that kept our "Circle of Black Aesthetics Unbroken", unapologetically:
DuSable Museum
Keith Morrison
Howard University
The Association of African American Museum Founders
The National Conference of Artists
Margaret Burroughs
James Porter

Samella Lewis
