Cattails
An African woman in a long skirt, is gathering cattails by the river in an open scoop basket. She is harvesting the cattails lengths, and they drape across the basket, balanced at her side as she stoops, pulls and carts the cattails beside her.
At home, she uses the roots and pounds them to make a salve, a balm that she sits aside until the full moon. She scoops out the thick ointment in her hands. She rubs both together, then extends them up and out to the sky.
Then she goes to work.
Swaying, painting, dancing hands reach into the stars.
Shards pierce the darkness from the other side.
The salve fills, oozes, seals, heals.
She works fast and through the salve, spreading, rippling across time.
And spaces.
