Description
The Song of the Deer is a colourful semi-abstract oil painting of a group of deer in an autumn wood. It is 40x30x1.5 inches. The painting shows a fallow deer buck next to a pine tree as he looks towards three female deer in a clearing to his left and above him. The painting is very colourful and has a slightly fairy tale feeling to it - there is clearly a story (or song) going on between the male and the female deer. The inspiration for the painting was a walk I took in Knole Park, Sevenoaks one autumn where there is a long grassy valley between heathland and forest where the deer can be heard calling to each other during breeding season. The stag in this painting is one I followed for a while up a slope through some ferns which were in full autumn mode of gold, orange, and green. Behind him, I could see a small bunch of females appearing and disappearing out of the forest and ferns and I felt happy to be witnessing a cycle of nature that is timeless and fascinating to see.
