MARJORIE BILLINGSLEY ARTIST STATEMENT

The following 17-min. video documents the online interview and debut of digital artwork done by Marjorie Billingsley entitled, "Only GOD: A Chat With Margie B". This special event was held on November 2, 2023. 
 
Margie’s extraordinary use of color and explanations of her work is an inspiration for all generations, and for all who desire to overcome any challenges. In spite of her limitations due to Multiple Sclerosis (MS), she has taken her limitations onto another level of Perseverance, Practice, and shows a willingness to learn beyond any physical obstacles. With the use of one finger, she has created over 100 works of digital art since May 2023 that are worthy of all sorts of future acclaims and possibilities. She says, “And, I am just beginning!”

GRATEFUL: A Gallery Chat with Margie B

S. Ama Wray is a choreographer, teacher, researcher, writer, director, performer, and inventor.  A TEDx speaker, she has presented at the United Nations, Princeton, Harvard, The Institute for Advanced Studies and Dance USA, she has similarly taught dance for prominent institutions, including the Martha Graham, The Royal Ballet and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Her collaborations in dance, theatre and music have been with Wynton Marsalis, Mojisola Adebayo, Bobby McFerrin, Nicole Mitchell; and for Jane Dudley, she is the custodian of her seminal work, Harmonica Breakdown (1938).  She is creator and custodian of Embodiology®®, an award-winning practice - an embodied systems thinking approach to improvisation – rooted in African knowledge systems. In theatre, she co-directed Stars: An Afrofuturist Space Odyssey, winning a British Offie Award for Best New Play. a Fellow of the Mind and Life Institute, A California Artists Awardee and A UCI Newkirk Fellow.

This 3-minute video is my visual tribute to one of the most productive, creative, and spiritually astute scholars of the 20th and 21st Century. The video was first presented at the Western Region Conference of the Association for the Study of Classical African Studies (ASCAC) in 2022. But they did not know each other, and just by coincidence this authentic history would become an intriguing "bridge-builder" between two nations and multiple cultures.

1.	MOTHERS/S0NS: Tribute to Michael Brown 
Like most civil human beings today, I am devastated by the inhumane treatment of Black bodies. During the days and months surrounding this tragedy, I worked on this painting. In a photo of Mr. Brown, I noticed how his graduation robe seemed to fit strangely, and doing more research for the painting I discovered his high school only had one cap and gown for all seniors to take their yearbook photo. That stayed with me as I completed the final background.

The issue of MIGRATION continues to be a concern for me. This painting combines cultural symbols like the Nkyimnkyim symbol of Ghana, the facepainting known throughout several West African countries, especially in Nigeria. I wanted to createa sense of urgency with the movement as it addresses climate changes. The figures are painted on recycled telephone book pages.

MIGRATION PASSAGE

This painting assisted me during a very difficult grieving time as I created another portrait. Based on a photo published in the Original African Heritage Study Bible of a member of the African/Edenic people in Israel, I found great comfort in making it. Several copies of it have been reported to do the same by those who have collected it.

THE MESSIAH

The trials against the now “Exonerated 5” young men devastated me, especially after hearing about the full-page advert published in the New York Times. I found this photo of the now City Council member Yusef Salaam when he was testifying before the Senate. Along with him is his mother, Sharrone Salaam. It captures many symbols of compassion.

This painting was my visual response to the beginning of "Strip Searching" at the US Airports. Two of my college women students coming back to school from Spring Break were violated at two different incidences and airports. After I noticed how quiet and despondent one was during our class session, I asked her about it. When she responded, the other student also recounted her experiecnce. Clearly, the experience traumatized both of them. It led to a very poignant discussion.

The East African Ankole cattle are the inspiration for this painting. The image of the figure is a part of my own visual vocabulary that is found in many of my

WOMEN WHO DANCE WITH THE HERD

This painting symbolically portrays my study of the many countries that capitalized or suffered “brain drain” during the Atlantic Slave Trade (now commonly practiced as “human trafficking” worldwide). The original was sold before it was completely dry. It was purchased at the "Art N Soul" benefit for the National Center for Children & Families (Bethesda MD). I continue to explore the subject of this painting through drawings, poetry,video...and now the idea has evolved into this "Women Who..." Project.

Along with periodically adding to the series (now, over 30 pieces), I have explored the theme further by presenting academic papers such as the one at the Association for the Study of African Life and History (ASALH), Pittsburgh, PA. in 2012.

"I'm Sylvia Douglin, a retired corporate trainer turned full-time artist at age 71. My creative journey began in early childhood with a fascination for faces and fashion. By the time I was four, I was already sketching and creating—eventually designing women's wear for a small clientele and exploring various artistic mediums along the way. 
ARTIST STATEMENT (an excerpt) 
 
Today, I create portraits using only recycled cardboard and paper. These materials—often overlooked or discarded—are my paint, my brush, and my canvas. I cut, layer, and shape each element by hand. Nothing is drawn or painted. Everything you see in my work comes from carefully selected and repurposed materials like paper bags, cardboard packaging, and coffee cup sleeves."
