Man of the Dassenech at the Dimi ceremony. Crossing the Omo and the delta flood plain beyond. We actually crossed the border into Kenya, with permits, and ventured into the lands of the Dassenech. The photographer had the good fortune to be here at a time when the Dassenech were celebrating their girls being circumcised. FGM is common throughout Ethiopia, and although dying in urban areas, it is still widely practised. Two of the Omo Valley tribes, the Dassenech and Arbore, have this practice. They take pride in and celebrate it; a girl cannot marry without it. It is a ritual which is imperative in their culture.Try it!
