DescriptionThe Mara, we have been following a coalition of two male lions for quite some time, one somewhat older and completely black maned, the other as his younger relative with a slightly fairer mane. Furthermore, a young lioness, in heat and flanked by both males. She clearly showed a preference for the older black mane and sought him out, but was cut off and thwarted by his younger and stronger partner, who placed himself between the two, making rapprochement impossible. Finally, the lioness gave in to the call of nature and mated with the younger and stronger lion. I have attended and recorded the mating behavior of lions very often, but rarely one so aggressive. The aversion was clearly visible in this lioness. Or was it my imagination?
